Assign an Exercise to Classes and Students

How the Assign modal works: by class, by student, or by link, and what changes in the exercise status when someone responds.

Updated on

There is no "publish exercise" button in Nivo. The Assign modal in the exercise builder is what determines who sees what.

Step by step

  1. Open the exercise and click Assign.
  2. In By Class/Unit, check where the exercise should appear. You can choose a specific unit or No unit (Class Root). Use the Filter classes… field if you have many.
  3. In By Student (Direct), check specific students for direct access, without going through the class. Search by name or email.
  4. In Students see results, choose the release policy (see Correct and Release).
  5. If you want, turn on the public link and use Copy Link or Show QR.
  6. Click Save Changes.

Unchecking a class or student removes access immediately.

Class or direct student?

Both paths exist because they solve different things:

  • By Class — the exercise enters the class content, visible to everyone enrolled. It's the normal path.
  • By Student (Direct) — the exercise goes only to that person, without appearing in the class. It's good for reinforcement, remediation, and one-on-one lessons.

Nothing prevents using both on the same exercise.

Status changes on its own

You don't need to change the status:

  • Draft — no one has access yet.
  • In use — changes to this status automatically when you assign the first student or when the first response arrives.
  • Completed — when you mark, on the results screen, that you're done with that exercise.
  • Archived — removed from the main list; can be restored.

If you unassign the last student and there are no responses, the exercise goes back to Draft.

Note: There is no delivery deadline in Nivo. If the date matters, write on the class wall or in the exercise cover description.
